Healing Frequencies: Tibetan Singing Bowls in Portugal

Healing Frequencies: Tibetan Singing Bowls in Portugal

The first time I heard a Tibetan singing bowl, I was surprised by how deeply the sound seemed to resonate—not just in the room, but in my chest. There’s something grounding about the way the tone lingers in the air, like a gentle reminder to slow down and breathe. Whether I’m using it to center myself before meditation or just to bring a sense of calm into a busy day, the bowl has become a kind of anchor—a simple, beautiful tool that invites stillness in a noisy world.

What Are Tibetan Singing Bowls?

They’re small metal bowls, usually made by hand, that sing—literally—when you strike or circle them with a mallet. The sound they produce is smooth, rich, and surprisingly physical—you can feel the vibrations in your fingertips as the tone builds and floats in the air. Originally from the Himalayan region, these bowls have been used for centuries in meditation, mindfulness practices, and sound healing.

If you’ve never tried a Tibetan singing bowl—and especially if you’re a little skeptical—I get it. It can seem like one of those overly “wellness-y” trends that people rave about without really explaining why. But here’s the thing: you don’t have to be into meditation, spirituality, or even relaxation techniques to appreciate what a singing bowl does. Just give it a minute of your time. Sit down, strike the bowl, and really listen. The sound isn’t dramatic or showy—it’s subtle, steady, and oddly comforting. It’s not about believing in anything; it’s about noticing how your body responds to sound. Even if you try it once and never again, that moment of stillness might surprise you.

Are singing bowls really healing?

It turns out, it’s not all just subjective. In their review, the Integrative Medicine Research Journal (2025) found that across studies from 2008 to 2024, Tibetan singing bowls consistently showed positive effects on anxiety, depression, and stress reduction. While it’s not a miracle cure, there’s enough research to say that sound therapy—especially with these bowls—can genuinely help promote relaxation and mental well-being. And even if you're not fully convinced by the science, the experience itself is low effort, gentle, and—at the very least—a moment of peace in a fast-moving world.

A unique sound healing experience in Portugal

On a limited series of tours, you’ll get to experience something truly unique — Tibetan singing bowls in water. You float in a peaceful natural lagoon, surrounded by nothing but trees, birdsong, and stillness. Nuno, one of our guides, gently places a bowl on your body. You close your eyes, breathe deeply, and just be. The bowl sings. You don’t just hear it—you feel it, humming through your chest, your legs, your arms. The bowl will resonate and vibrate while you simply don’t do anything except exist.

Meet Nuno — Sound Practitioner & Nature Guide

Nuno is more than just one of our guides—he’s a calm, grounding presence who brings his whole self to every experience. With a background in education and training in sound therapy from the Peter Hess Academy, he’s spent years exploring how sound, nature, and stillness can help us reconnect with ourselves. Before joining us in northern Portugal, Nuno lived on the island of Madeira, where he taught Physical Education and held meditative sound sessions with Tibetan bowls along the island’s lush Levada trails.

He’s not here to impress or perform. He’s here to hold space. When he places a singing bowl on your body as you float in the lagoon, it’s not just a practice—it’s a quiet invitation to be present, without effort or expectation. Guests often say they didn’t expect it to be so powerful. And that’s Nuno’s gift: creating space for the unexpected magic of the moment.

And, in a world that’s always telling us to do more, finding a moment to simply be might be one of the most powerful things we can give ourselves.
