Bird Watching in Northern Portugal: Discover the Wildlife Around Us

Bird Watching in Northern Portugal: Discover the Wildlife Around Us

In the beginning, there was the Archaeopteryx – the oldest fossil of a bird that has ever been found. When I was a child, I used to press my nose against the bulletproof glass at the Museum of Natural History in Berlin, fascinated by the imprint of this ancient creature in stone. I couldn’t quite grasp how something over 150 million years old could still be visible today. But even back then, I had this gut feeling: birds are something special. Now that I’m older, I prefer the living ones. They move, they sing, they fly. And best of all? They’re all around us.

Small Birds, Big Birds: The Joy of Bird Watching in Portugal

Some are tall, some are tiny. Some are majestic, others look like scruffy fluffballs. But every bird species has something unique about it. That’s what makes birdwatching so fun: you never know what you’ll see next. No matter the size, all have different characteristics and features that make them special in their own way. That is why I love birds. That’s what’s also making it so fun to watch them. Kind of like dogs, some are sassy, some are lazy and others are just a bit strange. It’s not just about identifying species – it’s about observing character.

Why Birds Matter: The Benefits of Birds for Nature and Us

Let’s be honest – in daily life, we mostly notice birds when they chirp too early, poop on our car, or fly a little too close to our heads. But birds are crucial to the planet and to our well-being. They...

  • Control pests naturally (no chemicals needed).

  • Pollinate plants and help them reproduce.

  • Disperse seeds and regenerate forests.

  • Clean up by feeding on carrion.

  • And they serve as indicators of environmental health – like flying warning signs when something’s off in nature.

If birds disappeared, the balance of ecosystems would collapse. Food chains would shift, forests would thin, pests would rise, and agriculture would become more chemically dependent. Basically, life would get a lot messier. So yes – birds matter. A lot.
